Homemade Hot Cocoa Recipe

Decadent and frothy, I love a steaming mug of hot cocoa in the winter.  As a child this treat was typically only indulged in immediately after coming in from the harsh winter weather (particularly after playing in the snow after a blizzard!)  Now as an adult, I pamper myself with a cup of hot chocolate about once a week during the bitter winter months.  It makes me feel cozy and loved.

I have recently been attempting to eat more healthfully, sticking to real, whole foods.  I have been following a blog, called 100 Days of Real Food, which recently shared a recipe for a mug of homemade hot cocoa.  When you read the ingredient list on a packet of hot chocolate, it is filled with unpronounceable items.  This recipe is simple to prepare and made with only three ingredients.

Homemade Hot Cocoa

1/2 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa (special dark 100% cacao works well)

1 teaspoon pure maple syrup

3/4 cup of warm milk

Add the unsweetened cocoa and maple syrup to a mug of warm milk, heated to your preferred temperature.  Stir and enjoy!

A co-worker of mine recently talked about a crock pot recipe for making large amounts of hot chocolate.  Maybe I will have to make it my mission to test out and come up with the perfect hot cocoa recipe this winter, as I did for the perfect margarita this past summer.
